Conference in Najaf on “National Mechanisms to Know the Fate of the Missing: Challenges & Solutions”

On the 17-18 December 2021, CPI, in partnership with Al-Alamain Institute of Higher Education, organised a national conference in Najaf on “National Mechanisms to Know the Fate of the Missing: Challenges & Solutions”. The aim of the conference was to bring the issue of missing persons into the public debate and to promote the search for solutions to the problem, particularly through religious scholars advocating for the “right to know”. More than 200 participants attended the conference, including religious and community leaders, the Iraqi Minister of Justice, several representatives of the federal government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government, Iraqi experts on international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and a representative of the ICRC. The draft “Law on the Right to Know the Truth for Victims of Enforced Disappearance” was officially submitted to the Iraqi Minister of Justice during the conference.
