Workshop on missing persons at Al-Mustansiriya University in Baghdad

On 12 December 2022, CPI held a workshop in Baghdad at the Faculty of Law of Al-Mustansiriya University on the right to know the truth about the fate of missing persons from the perspective of international humanitarian law and Islamic law. The workshop was attended by 50 participants: tribal elders, clerics, academics and researchers, personalities from various government institutions, and the heads of the law faculties of all the universities in Baghdad. The workshop was an opportunity to discuss the government’s actions to address:

  1. Finding solutions to the social problems arising from the cases of missing persons;
  2. Providing financial compensation in cases of loss due to military operations;
  3. Finding solutions to the legal system and legal procedures;
  4. The role of religious institutions and clerics in guiding the community as a preventive measure to reduce the number of missing persons;
  5. The Iraqi clan system and its role in dealing with the issue of missing persons.
