Preventing Violence and Extremism
Topic
This course explores the concept and practice of “Preventing Violence and Extremism” in the context of current international and regional trends in countering/preventing violent extremism. It provides participants with the tools for analysing and applying definitions of violence and non-violence with reference to the Islamic tradition, with an introduction to key concepts, including “wasatiya” (mediantude) and “ghulu” (extremism). Using case studies from the MENA and Sahel regions, it reviews effective and culturally- and conflict-sensitive approaches to addressing and preventing violence and extremism.
Outcomes
The aim of this training course is to equip participants with:
• A nuanced understanding of the development of international and regional trends in countering/preventing violent extremism;
• The background and application of vocabulary related to violence and extremism in the Islamic tradition;
• Practical ideas for culturally-appropriate approaches to preventing violence and extremism.

Researchers and/or professionals who are interested in countering/preventing violent extremism and related areas, who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in theoretical and practical approaches to addressing violence and extremism.
Methodology
This training course includes expert input, case studies, group discussions and practitioner Q&A.
