“With the wave of social uprisings that spread through the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and other parts of the globe, youth have come to the forefront of media attention and have gained the sustained interest of decision-makers and analysts. While there is a general consensus that youth were the driving force behind the “Arab Spring” the image of these young men and women, who called for change and debunked regimes, remains elusive. Portrayed by the media and some analysts as yearning for freedom, more secular, politically and tech-savvy, these young people do not constitute a homogeneous cohort and the reality of their aspirations and positions is complex.”
