Salafi-Salafi and Salafi-Evangelical exchange

During the Eighth Nyon Process Meeting a number of side meetings were organised between Egyptian and Tunisian Salafi-inspired political parties on political participation in the aftermath of the “Arab Spring”. An exchange between a US Evangelical and an Egyptian salafi took place too.

The Eighth Nyon Process Meeting brought together a wide range of Nyon Process participants from across the Middle East, the Gulf, North Africa, Europe and the US. Such diverse participation allowed a frank discourse to take place on the current challenges in Tunisia and Egypt, recent developments in the Gulf, analysing the situation and looking to practical action to find a political solution in Syria, and accounting recent developments and generating recommendations for policy shifts regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The meeting was a watershed in the Nyon Process and has taken us to a new level of dialogue and action. In particular, the presence of Salafists at the meeting brought a whole new dynamic to the process; one participant commented that we will never fully understand the significance of this development for the Arab world.
