One of the immediate repercussions of the 2011 uprisings has been the entry of new religiously inspired actors into politics, especially actors coming from Salafi-based movements who had refused political participation thus far or had been very cautious about entering the political spheres. It was against this backdrop that two workshops (Tunis 2012 and Istanbul 2013), organized within the scope of NAWAT program, brought together religiously-inspired political parties and movements from six different countries, covering the region from Rabat to Sana’.<\/p>\n

Tangible outputs and positive outcomes followed the two previous workshops. Indeed, following the two workshops, a second Salafi party, Hizb al-Silm (Party of Peace), was founded in Yemen and two Salafi participants in the two previous workshops joined the Ennahdha wa Al Fadila Party, in Marocco, to assume political bureau posts in the party. However, the 2013 political crisis in Egypt, the turmoil in Syria and its spill over effect into Iraq introduced a significant challenge to the process of political participation by new faith-based actors and democratic transition in the Arab region.<\/p>\n

In the light of this context, a third workshop on Promoting Constructive Political Participation beyond Party Politics and furthering peaceful coexistence was held in Istanbul on 8th-10th October 2014, within the NAWAT (North Africa and West of Asia in Transformation) program. The workshop, which was jointly implemented by the Cordoba Foundation of Geneva in partnership with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, convened 19 participants representing 10 faith-based political parties and movements from eight different countries (Mauritania, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, Kuwait, and USA).<\/p>\n

The goal of this third edition is to consolidate political participation of faith-based political actors in contexts characterized by limited freedoms of assembly and expression. The strategy to achieve this goal is by creating a safe space for exchanging experiences of peaceful ways of political “survival” under authoritarian regimes or contexts where the margin of political participation is very limited. The theory of change underlying this project is the informed assumption that political participation of faith-inspired actors could be consolidated by indicating through diverse Arab and Western practical experiences that politics does not limit to party politics and that it is possible to engage with the public sphere through other means than party mechanisms (such as parliaments).<\/p>\n
